Here we have a very special D12-45 Custom built by the fine folks at Martin. This 1976 model features the highest grade of pearl inlay work, beautiful rosewood, and is a fantastic playing instrument too.

The guitar has a replaced pickguard. The aftermarket guard features pearl inlay work, though one piece has gone missing. The guard does not quite fit the original silhouette, and you can see around the edges where the old guard was removed. On the interior of the instrument there appears to be a wooden cleat under guard, we assume to repair the top from the old guard lifting or being removed. There do not appear to be any cracks in the body. The finish exhibits checking, random light dings, and some surface marks from age or handling. On the whole though, the guitar looks to be in very good shape.

This 12-fret body guitar is done in the 45 style with top, back, fingerboard, and side of body pearl purfling. It has hexagonal fretboard inlays, and a pearl center rosette ring. The classic CF Martin logo is inlaid on the headstock, and the neck and headstock are bound. The fretboard and bridge are ebony, and the bridge plate is rosewood. The scale length is 24.9". The nut is 1 7/8".

The guitar plays incredibly well. We were pleasantly surprised how easy it is to fret strings and navigate the board. Maybe it's no wonder being a "Custom" 45-style instrument. It has a lush sound that is both warm and clear. It sounds fantastic when pushed, but is also sweet when played lightly. The neck set and intonation are good, and the top is flat without a hump behind the bridge. It weighs 5lbs 2oz. The neck measures .880 to 1.050 at the 1st and 9th.
