Gibson Les Paul Junior Double Cutaway 1961 - Cherry

Product Description

This is a great-looking and very late double cutaway Junior from Gibson. This early 1961 stamped serial number example is at the tail end of this model's run, right as Gibson began transitioning to the thinner SG body style.

The guitar has a cool look about it, with some nice figuring to the mahogany slab body. The top color is a bit more faded than the back of the body. The back of the neck finish has faded noticeably more than the rest of the guitar. There are long scratches, pick marks, dings and light buckle wear over its surface, as well as the requisite cigarette burn on the edge of the headstock. There are no breaks or issues however. The hardware shows some age and patina. The original bridge cracked apart at the treble-side adjustment screw, and while it still works and sits on the stud, we've added a modern TonePros bridge.

The guitar has one of the darker fingerboards we've seen. The frets appear to have been dressed at some point, and a few down low show faint signs of wear. This one weighs in at 9lbs 9oz, so it's one of the weightier ones we've had, reminding us of a Standard or Custom when strapped on. The weight gives this a nice focused tone with a tight punch. It's still resonant and clear, but quite a direct and hard string sound off the body. The neck is a slimmer 1961 profile as to be expected. It measures .780 at the 1st and .875 at the 12th, rounded without really ever flattening out down low. The guitar plays and sounds like a Les Paul, total rock machine.
