1985 ES-335 Dot
This is an early example of a Custom Shop 335, just as Gibson was beginning to sober up from its activities in the 70s. This one is unique as it has a highly figured set of maple for the body. The curly maple used borders on quilt in some places and really makes for a sharp looking 335. The dark burst finish really accentuates the grain and overall looks killer, it is almost a dark tea hue with a subtle burst. The neck is one piece mahogany with a bound rosewood fretboard that is wearing the dots that give this model its namesake. That back of the headstock has the "Custom Shop Edition" banner just above the stamped serial number and made in USA stamp. It has a set of Grover tuners and a Nashville bridge with stop tailpiece. The label in the F hole says both Kalamazoo MI and Nashville TN, a sign of the transitional period that this instrument was built in.
The guitar is in truly stunning condition for its age, with only the slightest bit of play wear and signs of handling. There is faint scratching into the clear coat throughout, but no dings or dents of note. The hardware is very well tarnished in a way that is pleasing, save for the tailpiece studs which is an indicator they may have been replaced. There is a circular scuff around the upper strap button, certainly from a strap. The headstock veneer shows the light scratching from string changes and some lacquer checking outlines the Gibson logo and the crown inlay. The frets, which almost certainly started off life low and wide, are bordering on "fretless wonder" territory but all the notes sound out clearly across the scale none the less. The guitar set up beautifully and is playing very well. The original sales receipt is included, from Guitars Etc. in Washington, as well as the original owners manual which has some pretty interesting bits in it.
