This is a guitar that represents the pinnacle of the historic reissue program at the Gibson Custom Shop, an R9 that is adorned with the highest level of aging available originally sold by Dave's guitars. A choice maple top with a wide flame that is uniform across, as well as an interesting grain pattern and flecking that is very similar to the Eastern maple seen on many of the original bursts. There is a lot of movement in the figuring from different angles and it looks great under the classic dark Kindred Burst, which was the finish developed for the replica of Joe Perry's 1959 Les Paul. The current production replica '59s feature a complete hide glue construction, the most accurate iteration of the plastics, a tubeless truss rod, nylon nut, single ring Kluson tuners, CustomBucker pickups with Bumblebee capacitors, and all the aesthetic minutiae that come together so well on these guitars.

The Murphy Lab Ultra Heavy Aged finish is the most distressed level of aging offered by the team that is lead by Tom Murphy. This one certainly has the tortured look that we all find so appealing on old Les Pauls. There is a healthy amount of fine lacquer checking on the top, back, neck, and headstock. Forearm wear is very prevalent on this one as are chips along the edges and some clustered dings and pitting. The back has a ton of wear around the edges, with the finish worn off, and accurate looking wear and chips around the control cavity. The treble side waist has perfectly replicated buckle wear down to the wood. The edges of the headstock have plenty of chips and exposed wood, with the neck having a lot of finish worn away. This example is interesting as the spots of exposed wood appear dark and dirty, as opposed to the raw wood look on many of the earlier versions of aged Gibsons. The Heavy Aged and Ultra Heavy Aged guitars are the only to receive aged hardware, with the sharp looking discolored tuning buttons and rusty tarnished hardware.
