2001 Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue

A really killer example of an R9 from the early days of the epoch of the historic reissue program from Custom Shop. Heritage Darkburst over the carved top of figured maple, nice wide flame that is very "clean" with little flecking and light grain pattern.Very much in line with the great tops that the first few years of the 00's are famous for with a nice dark rosewood fretboard as well. This model year features a long tenon, ink stamped serial number, aniline back dye, '57 Classic pickups with Gibson pots, and single ring kluson tuners. Some of the distinct features of this era are the truss cover that is closer to the nut and the brighter pearl inlays with slightly rounded points. This example is a gloss finish, they were also offered in a Custom Authentic finish which shipped with factory Grovers and later evolved into the VOS finish we see to this day. The capacitors were replaced with Emerson caps.

The instrument is in great shape, especially considering that it is on the border of being a vintage piece in it's own right. There is virtually no fret wear, although there are the small lines of lacquer checking in the binding at the fret ends that is so common. The hardware has a pleasing tarnish that sits well against the patina of the nitrocellulose finish. There are about a half dozen small dings scattered around the top, while the back has a fair amount of worming and buckle rash. There are about a half dozen small dings on the back as well, with a uniform amount of wear along the edges. The back edge of the headstock has a small chip just above the first number of the serial. All in all nice shape, but not so nice that you might hesitate to gig or handle the guitar
