Product Description

2014 Fender Limited Edition Redwood Strat

This is an exceedingly rare limited edition guitar from Fender, part of a very low production number of instruments. This was a run of three guitars that were constructed from reclaimed woods, this being the version built from old-growth redwood used in the 1933 construction of bridges just east of Bakersfield CA. The bridges were Civilian Conservation Corps and Civilian Works Administration job creation projects during the Great Depression which were decommissioned in 2012, with some of the timbers acquired for this special Strat. There were two Telecasters that accompanied this model in the run, one that was also constructed of Redwood and another made with reclaimed pine.

The guitar has some great modern playability features. The fretboard is a 9.5" to 12" compound radius with medium-jumbo frets, on a channel bound neck. This neck construction is the rosewood fret board set into the maple neck, giving the appearance of binding and the feel of a one piece maple neck. The bridge is a modern 2 point Fender bridge with bent saddles, which functions very smoothly and holds pitch under more intense use. A very unique feature on this guitar is the hand applied oil finish, which allows the body to resonate freely and accentuates the beauty of the wood and is seen rarely, if at all, on other Fender models. The oil finish neck gives a very smooth feel and a laser etched Fender logo ties the minimal look together.

This example has been modified with a custom wired pickguard done by FSC guitars in Brooklyn NY, with Fender pots and switch. A set of Custom Shop '54 Strat pickups are installed onto a Fender gold anodized guard, with a Seymour Duncan Little '59 in the bridge. The wiring is fairly unique with a master volume and tone, freeing up the back tone control to be used as a neck blend pot. In position 1 & 2 the neck pickup is blended in as you roll the potentiometer down, giving you access to the classic Tele neck & bridge tones or the unique sound of all three pickups on. A push/pull pot on the volume control splits the bridge pickup, topping off the switching options.

The thin oil finish has yielded a beautiful natural relic on the instrument after a decade of play and gigging. There are dents, dings, and scratches throughout the body. The edges are particularly well worn, especially the back just opposite of the input jack. There is a healthy amount of buckle rash between the neck plate and tremolo cavity. A ding and the surrounding area just north of the neck pickup was touched up by FSC guitars during the wiring installation. The neck is free of damage, yet has begun to get the pleasing discoloration that happens on an oil finished maple neck with play. The body suffered a split at the treble side post of the bridge, which received a sturdy repair from Mobile Guitars in Queens NY.
