2018 Fender Custom Shop Tomatillo Strat Journeyman Relic

An early example of the limited edition Tomatillo Strat, originally spec'd by and sold at Wilcutt Guitars, that features select vintage build specs with hot-rodded modern features. The heart of this run is the handwound Tomatillo pickup set, which are made with Alnico II magnets and Formvar wire. The middle pickup is reverse wound, reverse polarity which gives us hum cancelling operation in the 2 & 4 positions. The wiring on this guitar adds to the inherent versatility of this pickup set, with the Strat 1/2 Blender arrangement. After being fed through a master volume and tone, you are able to blend the neck pickup into the 1 & 2 position by turning down the back potentiometer. The neck, which is a pretty stunning AA flame maple, has the fan favorite 10/56 "V" profile with a 9.5" radius and Jescar 57110 frets which is unique fret size that falls between Medium Jumbo (6115) and Jumbo (6100).

The base platform is a '56 Strat, with an alder body and the '57 deep body contours. The aging and finish on this one are top tier, with some very specific notes for the finish and relic work. The finish is a flash coat lacquer with no buffing, which looks great. The color is Tomatillo Green, which has a slightly minty/off white look. This one has a bit more wear than the subsequent Journeyman Relic guitars, with some dings and a nice amount of discoloration on the body. The spec sheet specifies 'Dirty Checking', which looks great on the guitar with a nice pattern and amount across. The neck has a beautiful tinted lacquer, worn away on the fretboard at the cowboy chords and with a few chips in the headstock edges.
