Solid body Vintage Electric Guitar
with Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fretboard, Dual P-90 Pickups - Goldtop Finish
Product Description
Here we have a really cool vintage 1952 Gibson Les Paul Model electric guitar! This Goldtop is in very good condition with the original case and Wills Music sales receipt included.
The introductory specs for this model include a mahogany body, maple top, mahogany neck, and rosewood fingerboard. It has 22 frets with trapezoid inlays, Kluson tuners, and a trapeze tailpiece. The pickups are a set of P-90s wired to two volume and two tone controls with a 3-way toggle switch. These early builds had no serial number and no rhythm/treble poker chip around the switch.
The guitar is highly original without issues. The bridge is a MojoAxe compensated attached to the original trapeze legs. The original wrap-under bridge and feet are included. The tuners are original though one button has cracked slightly. The nut, frets, and guard all appear to be original. The finish is original. The electronics are original. The knobs are short speed knobs that appear to be old and the strap buttons look correct but might be newer.
The guitar has quite a bit of buckle wear on the back. The neck has some dings and lacquer chips exposing the wood in a couple of places. There is a small spot on the headstock face someone touched up by hand with black paint. The jack plate is mostly broken, but hanging in there. The guitar shows light scratches, dings, and checking over its surface otherwise. There are no breaks. The one oddity are some grooves in the fingerboard. We're unclear why these are there, possibly someone attempted to clean the board by scraping it, or they are tool marks from an old fret dressing.
The guitar weighs 8lbs 6oz. The neck measures .900 to 1.025 at the 1st and 12th. It has a classic full C vintage profile with the hint of an apex. It doesn't have too much shoulder and the fingerboard edges have rounded subtly from playing. It has loads of resonance and sustain. It has nice clarity with a warm midrange and a touch of natural reverb acoustically. The tiny frets are in good shape, though we imagine it would feel a bit more modern with a touch taller wire. The MojoAxe really solves the flaws with the original design and takes the guitar from impossible to use to quite fun to play!
Ships in the original Geib case. Includes the original bridge and feet, electronics instructions hang tag, a Gibson pick, old straps, and an old set of strings. Additionally, it includes the original receipt when purchased new at Wills Music in Salem, Oregon on July 1, 1954. The amount paid was $179.30.
