Product Description

Here we have a fairly rare and quite impressive Gibson Jumbo from 1934. This vintage acoustic guitar is in very good condition overall considering its age.

This instrument has been well-played, reportedly being used for many years by a professional gigging musician. While the body is essentially crack free, the instrument shows plenty of play wear on the top and buckle wear on the back. The neck and frets are in decent shape. The instrument appears to have had some regluging internally in the past, and a couple of the tuning machines appear to be accurate replacements. In all though this important instrument has survived well for having spent 90 years on the planet already.

Features of the 1934 Gibson Jumbo include mahogany back and sides, a spruce top, a mahogany neck, and a rosewood fretboard. The body is 16" wide at the lower bout. It is an X braced instrument with three tone bars and scalloped top braces. The bridge is square and made of rosewood, adhered without bolts. The nut is 1 3/4" and the neck has a V shaped profile with a large shoulder and a pointed French heel. The scale length is 24 3/4".

The guitar is indeed "jumbo", built to compete with the Martin Dreadnought at the time, with a body depth of 4.5". Though it still sounds like a Gibson flattop, there is a touch more complexity about it, along with a warm rich bass band present in its tone. It's quick and loud, and with the large shoulder neck, it is a beast to play.

The guitar ships in a modern case, but also includes the original. The vintage case top lid is fully detached. The case however tells the story of this guitar's travels with hotel stickers from various destinations pasted to it.
