The 2003 '58 Les Paul Brazilian Rosewood is a solid body electric guitar built by Gibson Custom Shop. This single cutaway set neck guitar was manufactured in Nashville, TN in the United States and is a Gibson Custom Shop Historic Reissue model. Key features include a Plain Maple Top, Mahogany Body, Mahogany Neck, Brazilian Rosewood Fretboard, Dual Burstbucker Humbucker Pickups and Iced Tea finish. The specs listed below pertain to the 2003 product year model pictured on this page.
The 2003 model year saw a revamp of the Historic Les Paul, with a number of features changing for greater historical accuracy. The truss rod route moved away from the nut, the Burstbucker pickups were introduced, and Gibson began using CTS pots and bumblebee caps inside. The tailpiece was lightweight aluminum, some plastic parts were upgraded, the inlay material became more antique in color, and the trapezoids now came to a sharp point. The guitars were offered in three colors: Washed Cherry, Faded Tobacco, and Iced Tea. They were predominantly gloss guitars, though a more expensive Custom Authentic option was available, which was similar to the later VOS finish. Additionally, Gibson began using Brazilian rosewood for the fretboards, a wood choice that initially seemed permanent, but would be discontinued by the middle of the year. The 2003 model was fully a Custom Shop guitar, finally separated from its Gibson USA roots. The limited run of Brazilian board guitars would prove to be the most accurate, rarest, and most collectible of all Les Pauls since those produced in 1958, 1959, and 1960 until later iterations of the Historic Reissue became available.
